How to Shape & Line Your Lips
Lip liner technique, cupid's bow definition, and natural-looking overlining — technique only, honestly labeled.
Liner is the quiet cheat code behind most "perfect" lips you see. Here's the technique, no gatekeeping.
1. Start with the cupid's bow
- Draw a small X at the center of your upper lip — this defines the bow symmetrically.
- Follow your natural lip line outward from the X to each corner.
2. The natural overline
- Trace just outside your natural line — a millimeter, not a mile. Anything more reads as makeup, not lips.
- Overline the center of the lips more than the corners for a pouty effect.
3. Fill and blend
- Fill the whole lip with liner before lipstick — it grips color and stops feathering.
- Blend the edge inward with a fingertip so there's no harsh line.
4. Highlight the bow
- A tiny dab of light highlighter (or light concealer) on the cupid's bow peaks catches light and adds dimension.
The honest takeaway: symmetry comes from the X technique; fullness comes from a restrained overline. Practice beats products.
